Glycolic acid skincare FAQs
Glycolic acid is a potent alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugar cane. It has the smallest molecular size among AHAs, allowing it to penetrate skin on a deeper level than other acids such as lactic and malic.
This makes glycolic acid one of the most common AHAs in skincare for exfoliation. Breaking down the bonds between dead cells on the skin’s surface encourages cell turnover to reveal fresher, smoother skin underneath.
Some of the key benefits of using this AHA include:
- Exfoliation and brightening: Glycolic acid removes the top layers of dead skin cells. This leads to a visibly brighter, smoother complexion.
- Improving skin texture: Its exfoliating properties can help make skin feel softer and, with regular use, diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Addressing discoloration: Glycolic acid can be beneficial for those with uneven skin tone and dark spots. Regular use may reduce the appearance of sun damage, age spots, and post-inflammatory discoloration.
- Acne treatment and prevention: Glycolic acid's exfoliating effects can keep pores clear, reducing the likelihood of acne breakouts. Its role in cell turnover also helps fade post-acne marks over time.
- Hydrating and elasticating: Glycolic acid aids your body's natural collagen production, a protein that's essential for skin elasticity. As glycolic acid is a humectant, it also helps to increase naturally occurring hyaluronic acid which boosts skin hydration.
- Enhancing product absorption: Exfoliating skin with glycolic acid allows other skincare products to penetrate more deeply, increasing their efficiency.
When adding glycolic acid to your skincare routine, remember that this is an ingredient rather than a product and it comes in different concentrations. Therefore, where it sits in your skincare routine and how you use it will depend on the product and why you want to add it to your skincare regimen.
To begin, gradually introduce this ingredient and build up from there. This is a versatile acid. Common formulations include:
- Cleansers: Glycolic acid cleansers and face wash products provide gentle exfoliation. As these typically contain 1-2% of the acid, they can be used daily.
- Toners: These products usually have a slightly higher concentration of glycolic acid than cleansers. They work well for those who want an extra boost in their routine without the intensive strength of serums.
- If you have oily and blemish-prone skin, a glycolic acid toner can generally be used 3 to 4 times a week and once or 2 times a week for those with dry skin.
- Serums: Often more concentrated, glycolic acid serums are designed for a more intensive exfoliating effect, which is beneficial for skin renewal and brightening.
- Creams: Glycolic acid creams are a higher strength – 10% and above – so should be used just once or 2 times a week to avoid skin irritation. When using a cream that has a concentration above 15%, apply it to your face, leave for a few minutes and wipe off.
As this is an exfoliating ingredient, this acid is best applied at night. It's also important to note that applying AHAs like glycolic acid can increase your skin's sensitivity to UV rays. Therefore, apply sunscreen every morning to protect your skin from sun damage.
Other ingredients work well with glycolic acid. While glycolic acid is hydrating, it can irritate or dry out sensitive skin, so choosing products that can lock in moisture can be beneficial. Hyaluronic acid can help to enhance hydration. Similarly, niacinamide, with its soothing and anti-inflammatory effects, helps reduce redness and sensitivity, making it an excellent pairing with glycolic acid.
Some ingredients should alternate with glycolic acid. Vitamin C, for instance, boosts brightness in a similar way to glycolic acid. But it’s best to use them at different times. For instance, glycolic acid should form part of a PM routine and vitamin C can be applied in the morning. This reduces potential irritation.
Likewise, retinol, when used with AHAs like glycolic acid, can be harsh if used simultaneously. It’s generally recommended to use glycolic acid on alternate nights from retinol and look out for any irritation, redness, or sensitivity.
