BEAUTIFUL HANDS

Your face looks great but what about your hands?

Hands can take a real beating from your daily activities. Sun exposure, chemical exposure from washing dishes and cleaning, extended exposure to water and dry, cold air.

Maintaining soft, young and supple hands requires a constant adherence to a diligent regimen, wearing gloves in cold, frigid, dry weather, and applying sunscreen 365 days of the year.

To prevent the natural wear and tear on your hands, you need to give them some TLC. You can keep your hands looking healthy and youthful by treating them well and keeping them protected.

After age 30, your skin gets lazy and cell production decreases by about 10 percent, making it less efficient at repairing itself. The tops of your hands, where the skin is thinner, tend to show signs of aging first from sun exposure. The skin of your palms is thicker and is usually not exposed to sunlight nearly as much. With advanced aging, the hands also lose their youthful plumpness due to the breakdown of collagen and elastin and the loss of fat. Bulging veins and wrinkled knuckles will start to look more prominent.

What can you do to keep your hands as beautiful as the skin of your face?

6 Steps to Fabulous Hands:

  1. Avoid overwashing delicate hands. Wear gloves when using harsh household detergents and only wash with lukewarm water, never very hot water that can be more drying. Apply hand crème immediately after getting hands wet.
  2. Regular sunscreen wear with SPF30+ is critical to protect the skin on the top of your hands when you will be outdoors and your hands will be exposed to damaging UV rays.
  3. Brush or dab on a nail oil twice every day to keep cuticles soft.
  4. Peels are an ideal treatment for aging hands, and work the same way they do for your face and décolletage. We recommend Invisapeel Intensive Resurfacing Peel for at home use to exfoliate the surface of the epidermis, and improve skin texture and tone. Leave on for 1-3 hours or overnight, and for best results, use 2-3 times per week. Using Invsapeel regularly will also help your topical skin care products to penetrate better and more evenly.
  5. Exfoliate daily with Correcting Hand and Body Scrub , our own chemical and mechanical exfoliating system that combines salicylic acid and sugar crystals to leave hands soft, smooth and younger-looking.
  6. Ask your dermatologist, plastic surgeon or cosmetic doctor about BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport® or Xeomin® or dermal fillers like Radiesse®, Juvederm® or Restylane® to help camouflage bulging veins and plump up shriveling, old-looking hands.

Skin Care in Your 30s

The thirties are the time when your skin starts to show visible signs of aging. At around age 35, cells get lazy and slow down so they don’t turnover as easily without a little help. Fine lines and wrinkles appear, and skin tone becomes more uneven from daily UV exposure, even if you are diligent about wearing your SPF. Brown spots and wrinkles start to develop, especially for smokers and sun worshippers, and those who have not taken good care of their skin until now.

If you are prone to acne breakouts, you may find that your skin is less oily and therefore, you have fewer pimples, cysts and blackheads. In some cases, acne can continue into the 30s and beyond.  Many women are also starting a family in their 30s, which may bring on another set of skin concerns, including rosacea and melasma due to hormonal changes.

The first thing to do is to step up your skin care regimen and add some more intensive formulations to combat the signs of aging. ZO SkinHealth Oclipse Sunscreen-Primer SPF30 is a great place to begin. This best selling multi-tasker acts as a primer under makeup, and has a sheer, light tint that can make it your every day go to skin saver. Packed with SPF30, it also protects from sun damage whether you are walking outside or sitting in your office all day by a window.

Another handy kit to try in your 30s is the ZO GSR (Getting Skin Ready) System. This trio of essentials will help optimize the effectiveness of your ZO® treatment program. As the first basic step in your anti-aging skin care protocol, three key products are included: Offects Exfoliating Cleanser, to be followed by the Offects Exfoliating Polish, and your new BFF – ZO Skin Health Offects® TE-Pads Acne Pore Treatment to control excess oil and keep skin smooth and clear.

Take on your 30s armed with a super advanced customized skin care regimen to maintain your youthful, healthy skin well into your 40s.

Treat Yourself to a Spa Night In

Who doesn’t love the pampering, skin reviving benefits of a day at a luxurious spa?!

Dr. Zein Obagi has recreated some of the fabulous treatments sought out by celebrities and offered at the Obagi Skin Health Institute in Beverly Hills for you at home.

Send your kids and the hubs to the mall or a movie, so you can finally have some ME time. Then start by lighting a few aromatherapy candles to set the mood. Lavender is especially soothing and calming. Pour yourself a chilled glass of champagne to relax. Put your hair up or wrap in a soft, fluffy towel. Wash your face, pat dry, and you’re ready for your treatment.

One of our all time favorite spa-like treatments is our signature ZO Medical Invisapeel Intensive Resurfacing Peel. It can be used for your face, body, decolletage, arms, legs, even your hands. The formula uses papain and bromelain enzymes to gently renew the epidermis or outer skin layer, leaving skin visibly smoother, firmer and brighter. For added benefits, Dr. Obagi added some kukui seed oil and safflower seed oil to restore hydration and extra lipids for skin barrier reinforcement. This single treatment does it all.

If your skin is oily and breakouts are getting you down, indulge yourself with the NEW ZO Medical Offects Sulfur Masque. This deep-pore cleansing masque was created to target oily and acne prone skin.  It works to absorb surface oils, reduce oiliness, and prevent clogged pores which cause pimples and inflammation. What’s more, this little tube is a lifesaver as a spot treatment for flare ups. You will want to take one of these babies in your travel bag wherever you go.

Voila! These two great skin loving treatments that you can do at home are sure to have your complexion glowing and clear.

First Signs of Spring

The first day of Spring is finally in our sights. In many parts of the country, the first sign of tulips and green leaves on the trees with birds chirping will bring a welcome relief from a cold, harsh winter. And the anticipation of spring making its way is also a reminder that it’s time to step up your skin care regimen as the seasons are changing.

Springtime will naturally be about spending time outdoors, running, jogging, playing sports and taking the kids and dogs to the park. So your first defense against UV rays and protect your skin from free radical damage is a broad spectrum sunscreen. To insure adequate protection, the general rule is to use a tablespoon of SPF 30+ for your face and a shot glass to cover your body. ZO Medical Oclipse-C Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF50 offers daily multi-defense protection. If you plan to sweat or go swimming, reapply your SPF as needed to maintain coverage.

Think of spring as the season to exfoliate and get rid of lingering dead skin cells that have built up during the winter and can cause your complexion to look dull and pale. Slough off dead skin cells with gentle scrubs for your arms, legs, chest, neck and face that contain microbeads, such as our bestselling ZO Skin Health Exfoliating Polish.

For your face, dead cells and debris will come off to reveal softer, fresher, rosier skin beneath with a dose of ZO Medical Invisapeel Intensive Resurfacing Peel.  Use Invisapeel several times weekly, or once per week if your skin is thin or tends to be dry, and watch your radiance return.

Since skin tends to be dry the during cold winter months, switch out the heavier creams you may have been using for lighter lotions or serums. In the spring, your skin will benefit from retinol to help improve tone, texture, fight acne, and minimize the appearance of fine lines and pores. ZO Skin Health Ossential Advanced Radical Night Repair is the pen ultimate retinol serum for daily use.

If your skin is oily, make sure to use ZO Medical TE Pads Acne Pore Treatment to keep breakouts under control, as skin tends to have more oil production when the weather starts to warm up.

Lastly, spring is the ideal opportunity to see your dermatologist for a full body check to make sure your skin is free of any suspicious lesions that could be pre-cancerous or skin cancer. It could save your life!

Incredible Shrinking Pores

Large pores: how can  something so small be such a big deal? Probably because enlarged pores make it difficult to have smooth, firm, tight, youthful-looking skin. Correcting large pores can be a challenge, and it’s even harder for men who tend to have larger pores and more oil glands than women.

Here are a few do’s:

  1. Make sure that you use the right cleanser. Use  one designed for oily skin—look for ingredients like salicylic, glycolic, or lactic acid, and make sure that you use it for one full minute—it takes that long to break down sebum. Even if you think you have “normal” skin, we recommend a cleanser for oily skin, like ZO’s Exfoliating Cleanser. That’s the first part of the regimen, twice a day—morning and night.
  2. Exfoliate! Once a day is not too much. You need to get rid of the dead surface skin cells so that the younger, healthier, living ones can emerge. If you don’t exfoliate regularly, your skin will appear dull and dry. We like a good scrub, like ZO’s Exfoliating Polish. It has round magnesium crystals so won’t irritate the skin. And scrub diligently—what you really want to do is to stimulate your skin cells, keeping them alive and active!
  3. Deep cleanse your pores with TE pads—they’re soaked  in a combination of salicylic and glycolic acid to exfoliate the skin, thus speeding  up skin renewal.
  4. Retinoids (like Retin-A) or high potency  retinol products (like ZO’s Radical Night Repair Plus) may reduce pore size because they help decrease the activity of the oil glands. Active Vitamin A treatment doesn’t reduce pore size for everyone, but many people are successful with it.
  5. Try a quick fix at home. Egg white masks (combine two egg whites and a few drops of lemon juice) can provide a quick, albeit temporary, fix.
  6. Microdermabrasion administered by a professional aesthetician will help exfoliate the skin and provide temporary improvement, but it, too, not a permanent solution.

And a few don’ts:

  1. Don’t get overzealous. Avoid the use of harsh astringents and toners, as they can exacerbate the problem.
  2. Don’t overuse moisturizers. They compact dead cells and decrease cellular turnover. When your  pores get clogged and skin isn’t allowed to exfoliate normally, you increase the probability that pores will be enlarged.
  3. Don’t try to cover up the problem with foundation or powders, it won’t work and will only irritate the pores.

Bottom line, when treating large pores, work with the basics—a cleanser and an exfoliant—daily.
